You may dream of the perfect client (we all do), but reality shows us that you don't find those terribly often. So, in preparation for the not-so-perfect clients of the real world, here are three things you should know.
1. Clients Aren't Always Accessible
You were hired as a consultant because there was already too much work. So, your client may have other pressing problems to deal with and they often won't be around to take your calls or answer your emails. Setting up a regular weekly phone meeting can save you both a lot of headaches.
2. Your Contact Doesn't Always Make the Decisions
Find out who will be making the decisions and try to make them your contact. If you still have to deal with another contact person, at least schedule a time to talk to the decision maker once a week to go over details.
3. Clients Don't Always Understand What Consultants Do
If a client has never worked with a consultant before, they may be a little more difficult to deal with. You will have to clarify your role and help them understand exactly what things you do and what you don't do.
