IT Consultant: Is Your Personality a Perfect Fit?

While you need technical skills to be a good IT consultant, you also need to have what it takes to work with people and best serve their needs. The IT industry, while obviously entrenched in and focused on hardware and machines is even more importantly about customer service and being able to shine with people.

You need to be assertive, not obnoxious. There is really very little difference between the two, so you need to be incredibly sensitive. You have to be able to stand up for your ideas without being aggressive and unbending.

As an IT consultant, you need to put your goals in business ahead of being thought of as a “nice” person. You will not always be able to be thought of as nice, because you need to always be mindful of what will be best for your business in the long run.

If you are able to put your financial needs above your thirst for working with the most interesting, exciting and cutting-edge IT projects, you will have the most success. Sometimes you will be able to have fun working with leading technologies, and others you will simply have to cater to what your clients need, because they are the ones paying the bills.

If you are capable of being assertive and putting the needs of your business clearly first, you have two of the required personality traits for being an excellent IT consultant.
