Oracle Buys Portal Software

Oracle paid $220 million in cash to purchase financial applications vendor Portal Software. When the deal closes in June, Oracle will have better traction in the media and telecommunications industries.

Portal Software is famous for their billing and revenue software that does not have an Oracle equivalent; however, many of the company's users also run Oracle software. Portal Software's other partners include Microsoft, Sprint, Verizon, and Vodafone.

Technology Business Research analyst Stuart Williams said, “Nearly all of the 'smaller' acquisitions, including ProfitLogic, i-flex and g-Log, support Oracle’s buildout of a vertical play. As consolidation continues to sweep through the telecommunications industry, [we believe] this acquisition allows Oracle to increase its share of wallet among the remaining players and provide 'one throat to choke' for ROI-pressured CIOs."
