IT Specialist: Better Than a Generalist

What You'll Do

Providing specialty services can help you grow your business. Although you'll focus on a specific segment of the market, you'll still need to provide a variety of services. As you provide services, you will likely perform the following services often.
  • network design
  • procurement
  • relations management
  • phone company, the Web host, and the Internet access ISP communications
  • equipment purchase and inspection
  • configuration, testing, integration, customization, training, and troubleshooting
How You Specialize

The list makes it sound as if you are a generalist, but you want to be able to do all these things and specialize in specific industries. For example, if you are working with a lot of real estate companies, then you can specialize in working with real estate companies.

By marketing to specific types of businesses, your marketing efforts will be easier. Your clients will also be more willing to pay more for specialized services than they would be willing to pay for generalized services.
