IT Consultant: Is Your Personality Up to Par?

Running a computer consulting firm isn't just about money or work ethic. You also need the personality to run a business successfully. Here are four traits that can make or break your business.

Are You Extroverted?

Computer consulting is all about working with people. A little humility and understanding can go a long way. Since you'll be living your work as you're starting out, you need to love what you're doing. You need to be extremely passionate about what you are doing.

Are You Patient?

As you dream, I'm sure you're dreaming of becoming an overnight success; it could happen but that would be the exception to the rule. Usually, it will take you three to six months before you will have a fairly consistent business. Often, though, a solid business can take a year or more to build. Be realistic and patient as you start out.

Do You Have a Positive Outlook?

Not every day will be filled with big projects and a huge cash roll, but you'll still need to remain positive in order to be a success. Even on the worst days, you'll need to be able to shake it off and move on.

Are You Reliable?

As your own boss, you'll need to be self-driven. You'll need to set an example for your staff by showing up at work on time and taking responsibility for your actions. Motivation, commitment, and a strong work ethic are essential to running your own firm.
