As you prepare to open your doors, there are a few things to consider. The first thing we need to discuss is certifications. If you're just working with small businesses, there's no reason to be too concerned with certifications. Most don't know what they mean, and they usually feel like they're paying too much if you tout all your certifications.
Although a business plan isn't a requirement for starting a business it can be helpful. All you really need, unless you're trying to get a loan, is a simple four page business plan that focuses on the following items: competitive issues, growth, and payback, positioning and marketing strategies.
The one thing you really must have before starting your business is a business name. Although you can work under your own name, prospects will take you more seriously and be willing to pay more if you work under a company name.
