IT Consulting Rates: What’s Appropriate?

Micro small businesses often rely on internal gurus for IT help, so computer consulting firms generally focus on the sweet spot businesses for most of their time. Determining the appropriate rates when working with clients, though, can often be difficult.

Depending on where you are located, sweet spot clients will be willing to pay anywhere from $50-$125 per hour if not more. The only problem comes when you're competing with a moonlighter who is willing to work for next to nothing.

Your minimum rate should be around $75 to $85 per hour. Although that may sound like a lot to ask when you're just starting out, you'll be surprised by how little that can seem after you calculate all the overhead and taxes you'll be paying. Be sure to carefully calculate your lowest price so that you never have to worry about not having enough money at the end of the month.
