IT Marketing: How to Ask for Referrals

Referrals may just be your most important type of IT marketing. Nothing is more effective in selling your services to others than the word of someone they trust and respect.

Asking the question, though, can be hard. Here’s the easiest way: “Do you know anyone else who could benefit from our services?” Or said another way, “Do you know anyone else in your circle of friends, family members, business associates, colleagues, vendors who could benefit from our services?”

Get very used to asking this question of everyone you know and meet. You should be comfortable enough with this that you can ask it naturally. You will also need to teach your clients what type of company you are interested in working for so that they’ll know how to recognize a potential client or referral. You can also create a client survey to help them come up with possibilities.

Another option is to come up with a referral rewards program. You can offer a $100 credit on their account, a $100 gift check, or a $100 donation to the charity of their choice as a reward for sending you a new client.
